Back in 1992 I was in Kashgar, main town of western Uygur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang, far western China. Every sunday thousands of people from the surrounding area met peacefully at the market. Kashgar is (was) a Uyghur city, with Muslim Uyghurs making up the majority of the population. Other groups that live in Kashgar include Tajiks, Kyrgyz, Hui, Uzbeks and Han Chinese. The different hats can be used to distinguish between the ethnic groups. Nowadays the situation is unfortunately quite bad - especially for the Uyghurs.
