    Silver Winner in Life Style/Culture

Between 1992 and 2002 I made six trips to Madagascar, each time staying between three and eight months. I was drawn to the beauty of the landscape, the quality of light, and to the people who, despite their extreme poverty, were warm and welcoming. In order for the work to best reflect Malagasy culture, village elders assigned proverbs to the photographs. "The Face of Madagascar" when exhibited or published in magazines or online includes the photograph/proverb pairing with proverbs written in English and Malagasy, the language of Madagascar.
