Why do I make landscapes? The answer is twofold. In part, I make them because the outside world seemed safer than the inside world of my childhood. Being outside offered me an escape from family troubles. In the woods, I found peace – something I rarely found at home. My grandmother, who collected Asian art and who was a skilled practitioner of Ikebana flower arranging, also influenced me. As a child, I was captivated by the art in her home and by her flower arrangements. If there is an Asian feeling to this work, it is because of her. I bleach the images to create my own magical world.
