As a visitor to Mexico, I began photographing instinctively, responding to the novelty of a new country. In part I wanted to reflect Mexico’s idiosyncrasies as they appeared first hand, even if the Media tends to report Mexico to be a country on a perpetual cycle of crises, and despair. I was determined to report something else. From the start I decided to work with black and white film, using a Leica, as this medium imparted a timeless quality, testament to a culture resilient to change with its values firmly rooted in the past and rich with its own long, dramatic and extraordinary history.
