I reported from Gaza 1983-2010 and witnessed the Israeli occupation and settlements, endless cycles of political violence followed by an Israeli withdrawal and the establishment of the Palestinian Authority. Internecine conflict between secular and Islamist forces followed until Hamas was victorious in Gaza. The rise of Hamas led to frequent military interventions and a long-running economic blockade by Israel. The current tragic war in Gaza has seen more destruction and misery than ever before, and as always, the most brutal and cruel impact is sustained by its children
