Formed by alluvial deposition from rivers, Shezi Dao, after a devastating flood in 1963 that caused heavy casualties, was designated as a floodplain by the government. Since then, construction and development have been prohibited. Surrounded by a rapidly evolved city, Shezi Dao remains stagnant and dilapidated, giving it the aura of a forgotten isle. Even on a bright, sunny afternoon, the island seems to be suspended in time, as if the clock had stopped ticking.
