In 2024, England endured 450,398 sewage discharges, releasing a staggering 3.6 million hours’ worth of waste into its rivers and seas. These discharges release raw, untreated sewage, carrying harmful bacteria and viruses that can cause severe illness and significantly disrupt biodiversity. All images were made on beaches during active sewage discharges. Photograghed on 35mm film, it was subsequently submerged in sea water from those same beaches that were directly contaminated by the sewage run off. This pollution reacts with the film to create the final images.
