Australian architecture is at its heart, contemporary. There was nothing to build on in the country beforehand, so it doesn't have much of an historical identity. But a modern architectural identity has been forming in the cities, gradually, decade after decade, construction after construction. And on a 2025 journey up the east coast of the country, I noticed many buildings that captured this chic modern Australian aesthetic of mixed textures, asymmetry, metal and concrete, and building higher and wider then ever before. A snapshot of the country’s modern identity can be seen in its facades.
