Sonia’s photographic practice is rooted in a material approach to image-making. The analog processes responds to a need for physical contact with the photographic surface and its transformations, where process takes precedence over outcome. Through film manipulation and experimental techniques she treats photography as an unstable surface. Working with self-portraiture, she explores intimacy and memory through the body as a vulnerable shell. The image continues to change over time. That ongoing state reflects the way she thinks about images, bodies and memory: never stable, never fully resolve
