“Skopje 2014” was the name of a government project in North Macedonia launched in 2010. Its goal was to modernize the capital, Skopje, by referencing its ancient roots and sweeping away the image of omnipresent brutalist architecture. The project sparked major controversy and protests among residents, partly because of the questionable aesthetic qualities of the new buildings, and partly because of the ever-increasing costs and suspicions of corruption. This project documents the traces of guerrilla actions directed against superficial façade modernization.
