The Italian side of Mont Blanc (4.807 m), the main peak of the Alpine massif of the same name, on the border between Italy and France. The first to climb Mont Blanc were the doctor and scientist Michel Gabriel Paccard and the crystal prospector and mountain guide Jacques Balmat, who conquered the summit on August 8, 1786. This historic feat is considered the birthplace of modern mountaineering.
