Thousands of spent artillery shell casings cover the grounds of a weapons-manufacturing complex in Iskandariyah, Iraq, in or around July 2003. The casings were believed to be remnants of the Iran–Iraq War. I photographed the scene from the window of a Humvee while serving as a U.S. Marine and conducting counter-ambush patrols in the area. The image was captured with a disposable 35mm camera and digitized from the original contemporaneous print. No elements were added or removed.
